One person is dead and another person has been critically injured in a crash where on of the drivers was going the wrong way on the Outer Loop of the Beltway Monday night, officials say.

Lanes are now open at the scene of the crash near the Arena Drive exit of I-495 in Landover.

Maryland State Police say that they were called to the scene at around 9:15 p.m. Police say that Nicholas O'Neil Clarke, 36, of Greenbelt, Maryland, was driving his black Toyota Corolla in the wrong direction on I-495 when he crashed head-on into a white Ford F150 pick-up truck.

Clarke died at the scene, authorities say.

According to police, the driver of the pick-up truck, 46-year-old Jason Allen Brown, of Upper Marlboro, was taken to University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center with critical injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, officials say.
