FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WJLA) - A 12-year-old boy was stabbed in Falls Church on Thursday evening, and a search is on for three suspects who apparently attacked the boy at random.

The stabbing happened in the 6200 block of Seven Corners Center, near the Home Depot in a shopping center that anchors the neighborhood.

Fairfax County Police say that the boy was walking in the area when the suspects approached him, stabbed the boy in the upper body and fled.

The boy's injuries were deemed to be non-life threatening, but it left the young victim bloodied and terrified. After he was stabbed, he ran into a nearby McDonald's restaurant for help.

Some assume that the suspects zeroed in on the boy because of an altercation, but investigators say they don't know of any connection between the assailants and the victim.

Among the scenarios officials are examining are whether or not they attacked the wrong person; that could explain why the suspects fled so quickly, authorities say.
