WALDORF, Md. (WJLA) - A Maryland community is on edge after a 12-year-old boy was accused of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy at a popular Waldorf recreation center.
Police need the public's help to find the young suspect, but the case is proving difficult for authorities, due to the ages of the children involved and the nature of the allegations.
According to police, the 4-year-old alleged victim told his parents Sunday night that earlier in the evening, when he was inside the Capital Clubhouse Recreation Center in Waldorf, a boy between 10 and 12 years old molested him.
"That's really sad, because I can't imagine if that happened to my kids," said Michelle Nelson, a Charles County resident and mother of three. "That would be heartbreaking."
The Capital Clubhouse is a large, sports-related facility in Charles County that houses everything from a gym, to a hockey rink, to an arcade, and hosts birthday parties.
"It's just alarming to hear that something like that would happen here at this rec center, where we come to the gym," said Charles County resident Monique Smalls. "My girls come here to ice skate and I wait in the lobby for them. I don't leave the building."
Several people told ABC 7 News they aren't so much concerned with where the crime allegedly took place, saying the rec center is safe. Their deeper worry is how it could have happened at all.
"Why is the 4-year-old left alone for a 12-year-old to even approach him in that kind of way?" said Charles County resident Tammy Brooks. "As a mother, I could not leave my 4-year-old unattended where someone could even approach him in that manner."
