FAIR OAKS, Va. (WJLA) - A teen was struck and killed Tuesday morning as he walked along the shoulder of Interstate 66 near Fair Oaks in what authorities believe is a suicide.

The crash happened at about 4:41 a.m. near mile marker 57 on eastbound I-66, Virginia State Police officials say. State troopers had been called out to make contact with the unidentified 17-year-old male, but he was hit by a car before they could arrive.

The teen was found dead along the right shoulder when authorities arrived, but they believe he was in the highway's right lane when he was hit.

Massive traffic delays piled up quickly but the eastbound lanes of I-66 were reopened at 10 a.m.
