Obesity linked to early puberty in girls, study says

Some researchers say the obesity epidemic could be causing girls to go through puberty at a younger age. The study found that girls started showing signs of puberty at around age 9. Typically, girls begin puberty between ages 10 and 14.

The research was done by the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and involved more than 1,000 girls from San Francisco, Cincinnati and New York City. The kids underwent multiple, routine check-ups.

The children were between ages 6 and 8 when they were enrolled in the study. Researchers found that the kids who weighed more started developing breasts earlier.

Pediatrics recently published the findings online.
