ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WJLA) - Classes have been canceled Friday at an Alexandria elementary school after an outbreak of what health officials believe is the norovirus.
An Alexandria school spokesperson says 200 students and 30 staff members at John Adams Elementary School came down with a stomach illness in just two days.
The school system has hired a company to begin disinfecting the building Friday. The job is expected to last through the weekend with classes scheduled to resume Monday.
"When one got sick, they all got sick," said Natalia Napoli, parent of an 8-year old who is one of the students who is sick. "He has a virus in his stomach. He is in pain. He is vomiting."
The school system says a small number of students got sick Wednesday, but the vast majority of sicknesses were reported Thursday.
