ABC7 welcomed back Good Morning Washington meteorologist Jacqui Jeras Monday morning. Jacqui's been recuperating the past few weeks from major surgery.
She decided to undergo a preventive double mastectomy. Jacqui has an extensive family history of breast cancer. Her mother, grandmother, sister and two aunts all have had it.
Even though Jacqui doesn't have the so-called BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, she and her husband Mike learned that surgery would reduce her risk of getting breast cancer from 30 percent to just three percent.
"It was a hard decision," explained Jeras. "I feel like the surgery was most likely inevitable for me eventually, and I would rather do it now when I'm healthy and strong and have good health insurance, than face it at a later date that won't be of my choosing."
Jacqui is undergoing breast reconstruction and is doing well. She says women need to know they have options and can take charge of their lives.
