In addition to eating your veggies, it is important to eat your berries, a U.S. study said Thursday.
Eating berries, such as blueberries or strawberries, on a daily basis, will help maintain your brain functionality during the aging process, according to new research published in the Annals of Neurology.
The study focused on the health benefits for women, saying that women who ate the most berries on a daily basis seemingly delayed the aging of the brain by up to 2.5 years, HealthDay reported.
The findings were based on a survey of more than 16,000 women, who filled out regular questionnaires on their health habits from 1976 through 2001.
"Given that we know that fruits and vegetables are good for our health in general, our findings add to the idea that we should be consuming more, especially berries, as a way to help maintain memory in older ages," said the study's lead author, Elizabeth Devore, who is an instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, according to HealthDay.
The health benefits of berries are linked to the fact that they are rich in flavonoids.
“Berries are a simple dietary intervention that may be helpful to the brain," Devore added, according to HealthDay.
