A $20 million system rolled out by the Department of Agriculture to protect the agency's smartphones and tablets is incompatible with at least a portion of its network infrastructure and therefore isn't working, NextGov reports.
The USDA has been trying to implement a program a platform called Fixmo to protect email and browsing on devices including iPhones, iPads, Samsung devices and Blackberry units. However, the container is incompatible with the agency's security infrastructure.
The technology, NextGov says, has a goal of preventing consumer devices from compromising sensitive government networks and information.
The vendors that the Department of Agriculture hired are the same ones the Department of Defense contracted in a $16 million deal to secure 300,000 devices.
