According to Government Executive magazine, thousands of feds who are still at work despite the federal shutdown could still be forced to take unpaid leave depending on how long it lasts.
"This scenario cannot continue indefinitely," Nicole Thompson, a spokeswoman with the State Department, told Government Executive.
Many agencies have been able to carry over appropriations from the 2013 Fiscal Year, Government Executive says, but if that funding dries up, they'll be forced to start cutting back.
On Saturday, the Department of Defense ordered most of its 400,000 furloughed employees back to work, but they still face being placed on furlough again if the shutdown drags on.
