Federal employees who have legally married their same-sex partners have been given about two months to update or apply for new benefits, Federal News Radio reports.
August 26 is the OPM deadline to alter health or life insurance plans to add a same-sex partner to an employee's plan, according to a memo sent to employees.
Federal News Radio reports that the same-sex spouses of feds qualify for FEHBP, FEGLI, FEDVIP and FLCIP programs.
The moves come in response to the Supreme Court's ruling last Wednesday that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. Federal News Radio says that more than 34,000 federal employees are either married to a same-sex spouse or have entered into a similar arrangement, such as a civil union.
