Despite the ongoing, looming threat of major budget cuts due to sequestration that lasted for months, experts say that Department of Defense officials largely believed the cuts would never come, Federal News Radio reports.
In fact, those experts say that top officials remain in denial over the idea that $85 billion in spending cuts are coming to the Pentagon.
"The department admits it didn't expect sequestration to happen, and now that it's here, there's still an element of denial that it's going to stay in place," Mackenzie Eaglen, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told Federal News Radio. "But it's crystal clear from the continuing resolution that it will."
