Defense department civilian layoffs could come in FY 2014

The Department of Defense may have to implement what they call "targeted layoffs" in Fiscal Year 2014 if sequestration budget cuts stay in place, Federal News Radio reports.

Civilian personnel, facility work and training may all be eliminated as part of a $52 billion cut in the department's budget, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a letter to the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"The inability to reduce military personnel costs quickly would put additional downward pressure on other portions of the FY 2014 budget," Hagel's letter said, according to Federal News Radio.

The Department of Defense is already in the early throes of sequestration-related furloughs, the first of which happened for thousands of civilian employees just after the Independence Day holiday.
