(WJLA) - The seventh edition of Star Wars is landing in 2015.
Lucasfilm, the production house behind the iconic line of Star Wars movies, announced Thursday that Star Wars: Episode VII, will open on Dec. 18, 2015.
Once released, it will be the first Star Wars film to be released in 7 years. The most recent film, which was released outside the traditional two trilogies, was Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
J.J. Abrams has been tapped to direct Episode VII, while John Williams will come back to create the film's musical score.
The Clone Wars hit theaters in August of 2008 and grossed $35.1 million.
The original Star Wars trilogy, comprised of Episodes IV, V and VI - A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi - was released between 1977 and 1983 and brought in more than $1.7 billion worldwide.
In 1999, Star Wars: Episode i, dubbed The Phantom Menace, grossed more than $1 billion on it its own worldwide.
Filming for Episode VII will begin in the spring of 2014.
