(WJLA) - Sam Champion's days as the face of weather for ABC's Good Morning America will soon come to an end.
ABC News announced Monday morning that Champion, 52, will be leaving the network to join The Weather Channel as its featured host and managing editor. He had spent the past 25 years with the ABC network, many of them with WABC in New York.
"With his commitment to understanding, predicting, and explaining the power of weather in our lives, Sam perfectly embodies The Weather Channel's brand philosophy," The Weather Channel President David Clark said in a statement.
Clark said in his statement that Champion will be a major part of the network's new morning weather program, which will debut in 2014.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to do what I love most at a network that lives and breathes the weather," Champion said in a statement.
ABC says that Ginger Zee will take over many of Champion's responsibilities after his last day, which is Wednesday.
