Royal Wedding 2011: Live blog of the events from London

Prince William and Kate Middleton approach the alter at their wedding at Westminster Abbey.

Good morning! We'll have every second of the Royal Wedding covered for you in this live blog, including updates from Washington and ABC7's Cynne Simpson in London at the wedding!

Keep refreshing for the latest updates and notes from the nuptials. To supplement your experience, you can watch a live stream of the wedding here.

11:17 a.m. (Final post): That's a wrap! The Royal Wedding festivities, at least for the sake of this blog, have wrapped up. Thanks for following along, and make sure to stick around WJLA.com for more Will & Kate coverage, including more stories, photos and video from London.

8:49 a.m.: Can't get enough? We just added a bunch of photos to our Royal Wedding Photo Gallery, including a shot of the ever-so-brief first kiss.

8:29 a.m.: A SECOND kiss?!? Now that's more like it, Will! Cynne: "Even Kate is overwhelmed by the crowds, saying "Oh my God" Prince William says, "Okay, lets go." They peck."

After the kiss, some revelers jumped in the fountain outside Buckingham Palace. Cynne: "Why are people in the Queen Victoria Memorial Fountain? Shouldn't we be on our best behavior?"

8:27 a.m.: ...and that was it? Modesty wins the day for Kate and Will. The Royal First Smooch lasted all of about three-quarters of a second.

8:22 a.m.: Barbara Walters just said we're three minutes away from the kiss. Stand by for royal smooching!

8:10 a.m.: Well, this is just too perfect. On the day Will and Kate got married, Filene's Basement at Mazza Gallerie held their Washington edition of the "Running of the Brides."

We swear, we can't make this stuff up.

At 8:00, future Kate Middleton's of the D.C. area stormed Filene's to get the perfect dress. ABC7's Irene Johnson was there. Here's the calm before the storm:

      And, ten minutes later, CHAOS!

Speaking of dresses, Cynne says there's universal adoration for Kate's dress: "The Duchess of Cambridge is getting rave reviews for her gown choice. British critics say the Sarah Burton/ Alexander McQueen dress was a perfect choice. It was made in Great Britain."

8:06 a.m.: From Maura, proving that it's not a Royal Wedding until Kegasus is invoked: "My friend Nikki Schwab, of the Yeas and Nays column for the Examiner, has done an unofficial survey of hats. She reports that most women plan to reuse them for Kentucky Derby parties, Gold Cup, etc. Preakness was not included in that list, unsurprisingly, but I bet man-stallion Kegasus would love to be in this room full of women."

7:53 a.m.: From Maura, in another example of the language gap between American English and British English: "Real, out-of-context quote from BBC announcer: "This is what we do in Hyde Park: We take a blanket, and we fill it with children."

Meanwhile, in London, everyone loves a parade! Cynne: "Police call this the "mile movement." People are filling the street and following the band to Buckingham Palace. It's a huge public parade!"

7:41 a.m.: Cynne: "Wedding photos are being snapped right now in the throne room. The kiss is coming!!" Anyone have any guesses on how long the kiss will last? We're sure there's gambling action on that, too.

It's getting wild and wooly at the Ritz, too. Weddings EVERYWHERE! "There is another Wedding of the Century, and it's happening here in this ballroom. It's between two dogs: One is a terrier named Prince William, and the other is a pug named Lady Lucy. Best Man Rambo, another pug, is the best man and ring bearer. Yes there are actual rings."

Speaking of which, isn't one Royal Wedding enough for today?

7:37 a.m.: Our short answer: Still not just like us. Those are royal minivans. Cynne: "Royals traveling in buses and minivans? Maybe they are just like us.... plus palaces, jeweled crowns, and billions of dollars!"

7:31 a.m.: Cynne: "Working that train can't be easy...you go Kate!"

7:24 a.m.: ABC's cameras just caught their on-camera talent in the studio snapping photos out the window at the coach with Will and Kate going by. That's all well and good, but make sure they're TwitPics, please?

Meanwhile, Cynne has some backup on her claim that Princess Beatrice's hat was most outrageous:

{}7:21 a.m: A noble move - ABC says that Will and Kate have asked for people to donate to charity in lieu of wedding gifts. One anaylst says that it makes sense; that they have enough "flatware and crockery." Meanwhile, Prince Harry is riding with the kids, says Cynne: "Prince Harry is hilarious...right at home in the kiddie coach with the bridesmaids."

7:19 a.m.: Still no kiss. Better start puckering up, Will and Kate. The cameras are waiting... Cynne: "The cheers are deafening. This is the moment people camped out all night for...a chance to catch a glimpse of the Royal Couple."

7:14 a.m.: According to Maura Judkis, the ratio at the Ritz clearly tilts toward female. "As for the estrogen level of the room, Olson says that this may be the most women he's ever been around at one time in his life. "I've never been to a bridal shower, but this must be what it's like." We're averaging about one man per every two tables."

7:10 a.m.: The official train length on Kate's dress is nine feet, a full 16 feet(!) shorter than Princess Diana's. Cynne: "The perfect fairy tale! The wedding was flawless!"

7:08 a.m.: With broad smiles, Prince William and Kate Middleton, now man and wife, emerge from Westminster Abbey to wild cheers and bells tolling throughout London. The bells will rink for at least three hours. Barbara Walters says, "People had better get used to it." The carriage that will carry Will and Kate was made in 1902, to which we say, "They don't make 'em like they used to."

7:05 a.m.: Cynne: "Most Outlandish Hat Award goes to Princess Beatrice (Daughter of Fergie, Duchess of York)"

7:02 a.m.: Cynne: "When William and Kate emerge from the Shrine, they'll leave the Abbey to sounds of "Crown Imperial" by William Walton. It was also played at Prince Charles' wedding to Diana. This couple clearly wants to incorporate the late Princess Diana into their special day."

6:58 a.m.: Don't forget: We want your thoughts on the wedding. Tweet at us!

The live stream is also still up, and you can leave Facebook comments directly on that page.

One ABC7 follower thinks Kate's dress was awesome. We think Courtney Robinson's hat is equally as dazzling:

6:50 a.m.: Cynne: "Already talking about children at the wedding...but no pressure, right?" ABC7's assessment: none. They're now singing God Save the Queen. Honest question: Does the Elizabeth II sing "God Save Me"? It doesn't appear she's singing at all!

6:47 a.m.: Cynne, on who's not at Westminster: "The Obamas aren't the only ones who didn't make the guest list. Former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were also left out." Meanwhile, back stateside, Maura has dogs in wedding dresses in this photo gallery. We can't make this stuff up.

6:45 a.m.: And here's what they're really at the Ritz for, says Maura: "Royal Wedding Watch brunch menu: Bangers, scones with clotted cream, bagel with lox. They are all delicious. They're temporarily out of the blood pudding. Is Prince William's bald spot looking bigger?"

6:40 a.m.: Maura Judkis at the Ritz: "This is as every wedding day should be." Expensive? "A day of hope." Ok, that too."" Also, a scheduling update from Cynne: "The ceremony will end precisely at 7:15 a.m.; the couple arrives at Buckingham Palace at 7:45 a.m."

6:37 a.m.: Cynne, on Will and Kate being adorable: "How cute are William and Kate? They keep exchanging silly glances."

6:35 a.m.: A traffic update from Cynne. If you're planning on going out in London today, don't. "London is paralyzed as everyone watches the wedding. Streets are blocked and public transportation is overloaded. Bicycles are the recommended mode of transportation."

6:34 a.m.: "In some sense, every wedding is a Royal Wedding," says the Archbishop. I know quite a few that would beg to differ. He's giving a wonderful speech right now about marriage in general, not just focusing on William and Kate, about hope being fulfilled in every relationship.

6:26 a.m.: Kate's brother is delivering a stirring oration right now. Meanwhile, Cynne want's more hats. "Who knew hats and fascinator came in so many shapes and styles? I'd like one of each, please." We think Cynne should do so, so we can keep collecting photos.

6:23 a.m.: As expected, no kiss at the Abbey. They'll enjoy that privilege of being a new man and wife at Buckingham Palace later on today. No pressure or anything - they're just having their first wedded lip lock in front of all of England.

For one person on Twitter, no kiss at the wedding is a dealbreaker:

      .bbpBox63911766010241024 {background:url(http://a2.twimg.com/a/1303425044/images/themes/theme15/bg.png) #1c031c;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px !important;line-height:22px;-moz-border-radius:5px;-webkit-border-radius:5px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata{display:block;width:100%;clear:both;margin-top:8px;padding-top:12px;height:40px;border-top:1px solid #fff;border-top:1px solid #e6e6e6} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author{line-height:19px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author img{float:left;margin:0 7px 0 0px;width:38px;height:38px} p.bbpTweet a:hover{text-decoration:underline}p.bbpTweet span.timestamp{font-size:12px;display:block}

{}6:20 a.m.: It's official! They're married! Another roar erupts throughout London. Cynne: "Will and Kate pronounced man and wife!!!!"

6:15 a.m.: As Kate said "I will," a very audible roar was heard outside the Abbey. Cynne: "Hundreds of thousands are watching the vows being exchanged from a Jumbotron screen in Hyde Park."

An astute observation from a Twitter user - it looked like Prince William struggled a little putting the ring on Kate's finger:

      .bbpBox63910009062436864 {background:url(http://a3.twimg.com/a/1304019356/images/themes/theme4/bg.gif) #0099B9;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px !important;line-height:22px;-moz-border-radius:5px;-webkit-border-radius:5px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata{display:block;width:100%;clear:both;margin-top:8px;padding-top:12px;height:40px;border-top:1px solid #fff;border-top:1px solid #e6e6e6} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author{line-height:19px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author img{float:left;margin:0 7px 0 0px;width:38px;height:38px} p.bbpTweet a:hover{text-decoration:underline}p.bbpTweet span.timestamp{font-size:12px;display:block}

Over at the Ritz, Maura Judkis had this dispatch: "Prince William has difficulty fitting Kate's ring on her finger. A chill falls over the room. Wedding ruined! Oh, no, there it goes."

6:14 a.m.: Objections are asked for. No one says a word. One person coughs. We assume that's a good sign. The couple is then asked to confess any reasons they should not be wed. Again, silence. Again, a good sign.

6:12 a.m.: Cynne: "Sir Elton John in the the house...looking dashing!" Also, if you're not watching our live stream, this might be the right time to start doing so. The ceremony is officially underway.

6:11 a.m.: Cynne: "Prince William just whispered a compliment to his bride. She's beaming!" Our expert ABC7 Royal Lip Readers (note: Not a real position) think he said, "You look beautiful!"

6:09 a.m.: Cynne: "The bride looks regal in a fabulous diamond tiara. She's entered Westminster Abey with her sister, Pippa Middleton assisting with the train. This is the iconic shot that will be replayed for decades to come."

6:04 a.m.: A hush promptly fell over Westminster Abbey as Kate entered and the ceremony began. Cynne: "29-year-old Kate Middleton has emerged. Sarah Burton designed the dress!"

5:59 a.m.: Cynne: "The bride is on her way. Wearing a lovely white lacy long sleeved gown, tiara and veil."

5:54 a.m.: Another target of heavy betting on the wedding was whether Kate's hair would be up or down. If you took down, you're a winner! Cynne: "This is British fashion at it's best. Hats, uniforms, spring coats...oh my!"

5:51 a.m.: We just caught the slightest of glimpses at Kate Middleton as she enters the car that will take her to Westminster. Lots of lace, it seems, and a giant bouquet of flowers. Also, much like Princess Diana, a large train, that "mustn't get crumpled," wedding observers say.

For some in Washington, the emotion of the moment is overwhelming:

      .bbpBox63906545154527232 {background:url(http://a3.twimg.com/a/1304006667/images/themes/theme1/bg.png) #C0DEED;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px !important;line-height:22px;-moz-border-radius:5px;-webkit-border-radius:5px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata{display:block;width:100%;clear:both;margin-top:8px;padding-top:12px;height:40px;border-top:1px solid #fff;border-top:1px solid #e6e6e6} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author{line-height:19px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author img{float:left;margin:0 7px 0 0px;width:38px;height:38px} p.bbpTweet a:hover{text-decoration:underline}p.bbpTweet span.timestamp{font-size:12px;display:block}

5:50 a.m.: The Queen of England apparently owns over 5,000 hats. Our question: Where does she keep them all?!?

5:47 a.m.: Maura Judkis is live at the Ritz, and was greeted, as she tweeted, by a harp player and a wedding dress.

ABC7's John Lewis sent us this photo of the watch party:

5:44 a.m.: Cynne: "So funny...I don't think the crowds can actually see who is in each of arriving cars. Still, they're going bananas!!!"

5:42 a.m.: The Queen of England, Elizabeth II, has departed for the Abbey. The ABC commentators continue to talk about how much betting has taken place and continues on the Royal Wedding, and Robin Roberts has apparently won the office pool because the Queen is decked out in all yellow. Cynne: "The queen looks amazing in yellow. She just turned 85. Unbelievable!!"

5:38 a.m.: Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles have left Clarence House and are en route to the Abbey. Kate Middleton shouldn't be too far behind right now.

5:36 a.m.: Every single vehicle that proceeds down the parade route, no matter who's inside, is getting cheered wildly. Meanwhile, the "Lesser Royals" are beginning to arrive at the Abbey, and despite having the "lesser" title, they're still more royal than you or I.

5:34 a.m.: ABC News says that there are about 10,000 tweets per minute about the royal wedding? Have something to share with us? Send your tweets to @ABC7News or comment on the live stream page!

5:27 a.m.: Cynne: "The formal uniforms are awesome! Michael Jackson would have loved to rock these looks." We here in Washington completely agree.5:24 a.m.: Cynne, from London: 'Princess Diana's memory is on everyone's mind. Several spectators have commented on how proud she would be of her son and the man he's become."

5:22 a.m.: A scheduling update -- we're about 20 minutes away from Queen Elizabeth II's departure for the Abbey, and Kate Middleton will leave the Goring Hotel shortly thereafter.

5:18 a.m.: Cynne Simpson in London: "They've arrived at the Abbey...crowds are going wild!"5:13 a.m.: Impartiality is on the backburner on our live stream, as one commentator just remarked, "In that uniform, Prince William is really quite a hunk. William looks fab...u...lous!"

5:10 a.m.: Prince William and Prince Harry have departed Clarence House and are en route to Westminster Abbey. We've also just heard from Cynne Simpson in London - she's getting ready to start updating us from the scene! If you're watching our live stream, William is the one in the red coat.

5:04 a.m.: David Cameron, Britain's Prime Minister, has arrived. His wife is not wearing a hat. I'm sure this will be discussed to great length in England.

4:58 a.m.: Can't get enough Royal Wedding? Lucky for you, TBD's Maura Judkis will have even more coverage! She'll be out at the Ritz Carlton Hotel for a wedding watch party, where she says there will be a hat contest. You had better believe we'll keep an eye on that! You can also follow Maura on Twitter.

4:52 a.m.: A group of Royal Guards are marching toward Clarence House and Buckingham Palace. Noted most for their stoic demeanor, does anyone care to make a bet on how many smiles we'll see from them on this festive day? We'll still set the over/under at one.

4:47 a.m.: Elton John has arrived. That means the party can begin!

4:44 a.m.: Photos are starting to trickle in from London of all the festivities. You can check them out at our new photo gallery. We'll be updating it throughout the day.4:35 a.m.: Just a quick observation -- soccer superstar David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, are getting a lot of face time so far this morning. They might be as famous as the royals themselves in Great Britain!4:32 a.m.: According to the official schedule, which as we said, should be followed exactly to the second, official dignitaries and heads of state from around the world will begin arriving in 18 minutes. To see it all happen, watch our live stream of the wedding!4:27 a.m.: Robin Roberts of ABC reports that an awning has been placed over the door where Kate Middleton will emerge for her trip to to the Abbey as to not let people see her dress before the ceremony. Those sneaky, wily wedding planners!

4:20 a.m.: Like all royal events, the schedule for today's wedding is extremely regimented, and there's no reason to think that there will even the slightest deviation. For instance, at precisely 5:10 a.m. Eastern time, the Princes will leave Clarence House for Westminster Abbey, and are expected to arrive exactly five minutes later.
