Kate Middleton charities fight for young people

Daybreak Daily's afternoon scan of the pop-culture app finds a good lady doing good things, a bad lady doing bad things, other stuff, and the mystery music video.

A CHARITABLE DUCHESS: You go, Kate, per the AP, "The Duchess of Cambridge has accepted honorary positions with charities that deal with a range of issues, including tackling drug addiction and helping young people, St. James's Palace said Thursday. The royal, who married Prince William in a gala ceremony last year, became a patron of Action on Addiction and the National Portrait Gallery. She has also become a royal patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices and The Art Room, and a volunteer with the Scout Association."{}http://apne.ws/zEFZJY

ATTENTION MOVIE LOVERS: Fun begins today, per the Los Angeles Times, "With 40 foreign-language Oscar contenders, a 15-hour movie about the history of movies, and appearances by Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Michelle Williams, this year's Palm Springs International Film Festival will cater to a wide spectrum of cinema fans." http://lat.ms/zDTy8s

THIS IS SO COOL: Today's Morning Joe appearance reminded of just how cool, per the Wall Street Journal, "For the last 11 years, Edward Burns has scoped out his TriBeCa neighborhood, looking for restaurants and faades to include in one of his New York films. His decade-long homework assignment resulted in "Newlyweds," a film shot with a three-man crew that details the struggles of a freshly married couple. Burns wrote, produced, directed and starred in the film, which will premiere in New York on Jan 11." http://on.wsj.com/x12YRI

LITTLE DREW: Phone home with the good news, per People, "Wedding bells are in the air for Drew Barrymore and her boyfriend - art consultant Will Kopelman. They got engaged in Sun Valley, Idaho, a source tells PEOPLE." http://bit.ly/zvhXTN

JERRY: He still ripples, per Rolling Stone, "The late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia will be the subject of a forthcoming feature-length documentary. Filmmaker Malcolm Leo, who has previously made movies on Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys, will build the doc around a three-hour interview he conducted with Garcia in 1987."{}{}http://bit.ly/zvuJFP

INTERESTING: Say what you will about the Kardashians, but consider this, per PerezHilton, "Khloe Kardashian helped the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) raise thousands of dollar to help save endangered tigers all by simply tweeting: "By texting TIGERS to 20222, your $10 donation will help WWF save the tiger in its vast range - from India to China, to the Russian Far East." We're sure it helped that she has 5.6 million followers. . . Apparently after the tweet, over 600 people texted and the WWF raised over $6,000." http://bit.ly/wiIrVj

MORE FOR THE CINEMA BUFFS: But a good one, per Deadline Hollywood, "The Writers Guild nominations seemed to fall right in line with expectations with one glaring exception. The noticeable absence of Oscar front runner The Artist in Original Screenplay was not a diss but simply because that film, written by its director Michel Hazanavicius was ineligible under the WGA's award rules as it was not produced under a guild contract." http://bit.ly/w4SItw

WHATEVER: A holy tat, per Radar, "Justin Bieber hung out at the beach with his dad on Wednesday and showed off a rather large tattoo of Jesus on his left calf, and RadarOnline.com has the photos." http://bit.ly/wjTk59

JACKIE: What'll Kelso think?, per E!, "French fashion house Christian Dior just signed Mila Kunis to rep its spring/summer 2012 ad campaign." http://eonli.ne/yQwbVp

UM, WOW: Nothing to add, per the Denver Post, "A 36-year-old Denver woman, apparently drunk, leaned against an iconic Clyfford Still painting worth more than $30 million last week, punched it, slid down it and urinated on herself, according to a criminal case against Carmen Lucette Tisch." http://bit.ly/xvw7QJ

AND FINALLY: Today's mystery music video. http://bit.ly/wRMDfP
