Today's pop-culture roundup includes the hardest working dude in the biz, fallout from a Keith Urban concert gone sour, Marvel Comics, the Grateful Dead, our mystery music video and much more.

‘GET ON UP’: Gettin’ a cold sweat, per the New York Times, “If musical genius is a gift randomly bestowed, it requires intense monomaniacal cultivation to reach fruition. Witness James Brown, a.k.a. “the hardest-working man in show business,” as portrayed indelibly by Chadwick Boseman in the viscerally explosive biopic “Get On Up.” A monumental egotist, perfectionist and harsh taskmaster with a streak of paranoia, Brown reigned as the absolute monarch of his personal kingdom, answering to no one but himself.

“One of the most revealing scenes in a movie that struggles mightily but not always successfully to cast off the clichés of musical biographies shows a brutal rehearsal in which Brown, at his most tyrannical, grows increasingly exasperated with his musicians during a run-through of the seminal funk song “Cold Sweat.” Brown finally hammers home his point by shouting that no matter what their instruments may look like, they are all drums.”

KEITH URBAN REACTS: Of concert mayhem, per the Los Angeles Times, “Keith Urban spoke out regarding events at his recent Boston concert on Thursday, the same day an 18-year-old Boston man was charged with raping a 17-year-old at that Saturday show. "My team and I were horrified to learn of the events reported in Boston this past weekend and our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected," the country star and "American Idol" judge said in a statement on his website. "This type of behavior stands in stark contrast to the spirit of our shows."

“Sean Murphy, who was arrested Saturday night at the Xfinity Center, pleaded not guilty Thursday to raping the teen on the lawn at the outdoor venue. He told police that the encounter, which was photographed and videotaped by several onlookers, was consensual, the Attleboro (Mass.) Sun-Chronicle reported.”

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Of comic books, per Variety, “ “Guardians of the Galaxy” arrives in our solar system this weekend, powered by the strength of one of the most powerful brands in movies — Marvel.

“These interstellar adventurers are not well known to non-comicbook readers, but studio analysts are still projecting big things when the picture touches down in multiplexes. That’s because Marvel’s cinematic universe has grossed $6.3 billion since it kicked off with 2008’s “Iron Man,” making it the second most successful film franchise, trailing “Harry Potter.” The film is being marketed heavily on that record of success, with promotional materials heralding the picture as springing from the brains that brought audiences “The Avengers,” “Thor” and “Captain America.” ’’

‘SHARKNADO 2’: No surprises here, per USA TODAY, “You knew Sharknado 2 would be a hit on social media. But it also scored impressive ratings on Syfy: An average of 3.9 million viewers tuned in Wednesday night, up from 1.4 million for the first airing of the original Sharknado on July 11, 2013.

“The total marked the cable network's most-watched original movie (though it's done better with series and miniseries). And the 1.6 million young adults who tuned in outnumbered shows such as CBS' Extant and Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. But the Twitter storm was its most impressive total: 531,000 tweets about the film were sent Wednesday night, up from 318,000 for last summer's initial run.”

WOODY ALLEN: This is a good read, per the New York Observer, “Would it kill you to know that Woody Allen is just like us? He’s got two teenage girls who listen to pop music on their iPhones. He’s always worried that something bad will happen to them. He exercises every morning but struggles to keep his weight up. (Okay. He’s not totally like us.)

“He’s also 78 years old, has won four Academy Awards, has directed actors to six more wins (18 nominations), and has never missed a year releasing a film since 1977. This past weekend came No. 44, a comedy called Magic in the Moonlight. Whether it’s a hit or not doesn’t matter to him particularly, because it’s done, and there’s nothing he can do about it. He’s busy finishing No. 45 and thinking about No. 46. But so far, so good: in 17 theaters, Magic took in a very healthy $426,000.”

DUFF TIMES: But that’s life, per People, “Hilary Duff admits she's been having a hard time. The singer split from husband Mike Comrie in January, and she says the change hasn't been easy. "I'm separated from my husband right now, which has been a very difficult thing to go through, but we have a lot of love for each other and we have this beautiful baby," Duff, 26, tells Billboard.”

HARRY POTTER: Or something like that, per The Hollywood Reporter, “The Mexican distributor of What If on Thursday was forced to cancel a red carpet event that was to feature Daniel Radcliffe due to crowd control concerns.

"Distributor Diamond Films Mexico said Mexico City's civil protection agency ordered it to suspend the event, scheduled for a Mexico City shopping mall. The reason? An unexpectedly large number of fans who turned out to see Radcliffe prior to the event.”{ }

LEAKED!: Even so. . ., per Celebuzz!, “Nicki Minaj is probably angrier than a "Monster" right now, because a low quality leak of her already-delayed new single, "Anaconda," has made its way online . The good news is that if you like Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back," you are probably going to love this song, too.”

WHAT’S UP DOC?: Of carrots, er, carats, per The Insider, “If carats were a measurement of devotion, we'd say Avril Lavigne's husband, Chad Kroeger, really, really, really loves her. The "Hello Kitty" singer, 29, shared a snapshot of her first anniversary gift from the Nickelback singer and guitarist, 39: a massive diamond ring.”

STOP THE PRESSES: Just the facts, per TMZ, “Chris Brown played the Rihanna card one too many times with Karrueche Tran ... we've learned Karrueche has not only broken up with him ... for safe measure she changed her number. Our sources say Karrueche exploded when Chris recently "liked" 2 fan photos on Instagram of Rihanna and him together.”

AND FINALLY: Today’s mystery music video.

BY THE WAY: Happy birthday, Jerry Garcia.
