Beyonce: New music expected before Super Bowl performance

Today’s peek inside the various recording studios of the pop-culture world finds, among other things, Beyonce pre-football game, Elizabeth Banks in a modern family, Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, and the mystery music video.

SUPER PREPPING: And it’s not about the NFL, per Billboard, “Beyonce's performance at the Super Bowl halftime show, taking place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 3, 2013, will be preceded by new music, according to her frequent collaborator The-Dream. After co-writing five songs on Beyonce's 2011 album "4," The-Dream (real name: Terius Nash) tells Billboard that he's "involved in every part of the process" for her forthcoming fifth solo album.”

SHE’S BACK: Of a modern party, per Entertainment Weekly, “EW has learned exclusively that Elizabeth Banks will reprise her season one character as Mitch & Cam’s wild and hard-partying best girlfriend on Modern Family this season! In the episode that’ll air in 2013, Sal delivers big news to Mitch and Cam that she’s getting married.”

JERSEY SOPRANOS: David Chase new film looks at a budding Jersey rocker, per the New York Times, “. . .(It) makes sense that the credits on “Not Fade Away" include three guys from New Jersey. This is the first feature film from Mr. Chase, the creator of “The Sopranos.” The film’s executive producer and musical supervisor is Steven Van Zandt, the E Street guitarist who played Silvio on that HBO series. And James Gandolfini, who doesn’t need much of an introduction in this context, plays yet another emotionally crabbed father trying to keep his family together in the Garden State.”

YAWN: That seems to be the attitude of the CEO, per Radar, “Will Angus T. Jones stay on Two and a Half Men? According to CBS CEO Les Moonves, maybe -- or maybe not. Moonves made his first, and very candid, public comments Tuesday about Jones, 19, in wake of his surprising religious-fuelled rant against the hit CBS sit-com -- a show he called “filth.” . . . Regarding Jones’ uncertain future on the show, which has seen more than its fair share of backstage drama, Moonves said: “I don’t know what our status is with him.” But he added: “After going through what we went through with Charlie Sheen, it’s been a piece of cake.”

GOING DARK: Hey, at least she tried, per The Wrap, “So much for Kathie Lee Gifford's career as a playwright. The former "Live!" co-host's Broadway musical "Scandalous: The Life and Times of Aimee Semple McPherson," is shuttering a little after three weeks after it opened. The musical, which opened Nov. 15, will have its final performance Dec. 9 at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York.”

EXPANDING AN EMPIRE: Somewhere Simon Cowell is shaking his head, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Ryan Seacrest is looking to expand his reach once again. His newly launched Seacrest Global Group has made its first acquisition by purchasing a majority stake in New York-based strategic marketing agency Civic Entertainment Group. The firm, which will continue to operate under the leadership of co-founders StuartRuderfer and David Cohn, is behind such high-profile, experiential promotional efforts as The CNN Grill at both the 2008 National Conventions and SXSW.”

DUMBING DOWN: Provocative comments, per Rolling Stone, “In a new interview with Esquire UK, Jack White ripped Lady Gaga and celebrity culture, lamenting celebrities' efforts to appear relatable, which he thinks leads to unfair expectations of normalcy. "The goal of modern celebrity is to make yourself into the lowest common denominator," said White.”

SMITTEN: A different kind of office romance, per People, “Move over, Ben Affleck! John Krasinski wants to be Matt Damon's new best friend. "Matt is one of the coolest guys I know, and I'm totally in love with the guy, but he doesn't even know my name," Krasinski joked to PEOPLE at the New York premiere of his new movie Promised Land on Tuesday.”

WHY NOT?: There doesn’t appear to be much acrimony between the two, per TMZ, “Billy Bob Thornton tells TMZ ... he'd be "more than happy" to attend Angelina Jolie's wedding (whenever she and Brad Pitt decide to tie the knot) ... if he's actually invited. Several reports have surfaced that Angie already made the decision to invite her ex-husband to the eventual Jolie-Pitt wedding-palooza. But when we spoke to Billy at the Sunset Marquis last night, it was clear he hasn't received an official invite ... yet.”

AND FINALLY: Today’s mystery music video.
