ARLINGTON, Va. (WJLA) – Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges team up for a new futuristic movie, but is their star power enough to draw people back to the theater this weekend?
“The Giver” does a little bit of re-gifting in this familiar story of a cold, bloodless future.
Bridges plays the Giver, a wise old guy—and the only guy—who keeps the memory of the past, in order to advise for the future. Society assigns Brenton Twaites as his apprentice, and the two conspire to shake things up. Streep has a creepy turn as an all-seeing hologram.
“The Giver” feels like a lot of other movies; it doesn’t break any new ground, but tells a familiar story in an enjoyable way. My give to “The Giver” is two and a half out of four stars.
Sylvester Stallone and company gear up for “The Expendables 3”—geezer action that’s more expendable than ever; it gets one star.
This weekend’s best bets are “Boyhood,” “Get On Up,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Hundred-Foot Journey.”
Next week brings “Sin City: A Dame to Kill for.” Enough said.
