(WJLA) - In 1985, Ron Woodruff – a Dallas electrician and part-time rodeo rider – tested HIV positive in the days when few understood the disease.
As Woodruff, aka Mattthew McConaughey, reads up on his condition and determines that alternative drugs could help more than the few approved by the medical establishment, he forms the Dallas Buyers Club, selling memberships with the help of a transgender patient, played by Jared Leto.
Both actors turn in outstanding performances, which involve frightening weight loss as part of a story that mixes humor, history, and enlightenment.
Worth 3.5 stars out of 4 as well as your full attention.
A weekend best bet, along with ‘American Hustle’ and ’12 Years a Slave.’
