(WJLA) - 'Get On Up' does what a musical should - it captures the excitement of the music that came out of James Brown's life.
James Brown knew what he wanted - a driving beat, contagious from the first note.
'Get On Up' portrays Brown's life without blinders, skipping around from his triumphs to his demons, to his abusive childhood. He learned from his loneliness.
Chadwick Boseman plays Brown convincingly. He turned heads last year as another icon, Jackie Robinson in '42.' He's definitely a character with darkness and light.
'Get On Up' got made partly because of Mick Jagger, who signed on as producer - a musician's tribute to the godfather of soul.
This weekend, the sci-fi thriller 'Lucy' led the box office. The top three includes 'Hercules' and 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.'
