'Jersey Shore,' Snooki about to go the way of tanning beds

Today’s pop-culture roundup includes ‘Jersey Shore’ making its last stand, an American Idol spat, Mumford & Sons, other things, and the mystery music video.

SEE YA, SNOOKI: per the Los Angeles Times, “Like a tan growing pale, "Jersey Shore" is fading into the TV sunset. Thursday marks the beginning of its sixth season — its last. It began as just another low-budget MTV reality show, with lower expectations, that would chronicle the fist-pumping antics of its ultra-bronzed, ultra-average stars who would be cooped up in a house in Seaside Heights, N.J. Then the series aired in December 2009, and it quickly and curiously morphed into a surprisingly potent pop force that made "Snooki" a household name, turned an unknown cast into late-night punch lines and, ultimately, its title became shorthand for the further dumbing down of American culture.”

MEANWHILE: Wow, what a shocker, per Us Weekly, “Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is in a tough situation. The Jersey Shore star, 30, who entered rehab for substance abuse in March, "isn't sober anymore," a source tells Us Weekly. . . at West Hollywood's London hotel September 26, a witness saw him "downing so many cocktails, he could barely stand." (His rep responds, "He has not been drinking.")”

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: Potential demolition of art, per the New York Times, “It’s hard to say which is more startling. That a developer in Phoenix could threaten — by Thursday, no less — to knock down a 1952 house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Or that the house has until now slipped under the radar, escaping the attention of most architectural historians, even though it is one of Wright’s great works, a spiral home for his son David.”

CAT FIGHT: Sorry, but that’s kind of what it was, per Entertainment Weekly, “The American Idol auditions were reportedly disrupted Tuesday after two new judges on the show engaged in a contentious fight on the panel. In a video obtained by TMZ, rapper Nicki Minaj curses out pop singer Mariah Carey at a stop in Charlotte, N.C. The audio makes the conversation difficult to understand, but according to one translation, Minaj shouts, “I told them, I’m not f–kin’ putting up with her f–kin’ highness over there.”

OUR LIPS ARE SEALED: Doesn’t matter anyway. . .per The Hollywood Reporter, “Movie star, singer, Glee co-star, healthy chef, director of the Goop website – Gwyneth Paltrow is a multihyphenate to say the least. Now it looks like we can add "producer of musicals" to the list. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Paltrow is negotiating to collaborate on a theatrical production based on The Go-Go's.”

MUMFORD & SONS: On a big-time roll, per The Independent, “They were at Number 1 in the UK album charts last week, but today folksters Mumford & Sons are celebrating success Stateside after scoring another Number 1 in the US and breaking sales records for 2012. Babel shifted 600,000 copies in its first week across the pond, making it the fastest-selling record in America this year.”

NO DEBATE: Only because there is a debate, per E!, “Well, there's no secret about how Barack and Michelle Obama are planning on spending their 20th wedding anniversary. And while the first prime-time presidential debate, in which he'll face off against Mitt Romney, isn't exactly the romantic candlelight dinner other couples might enjoy, it's certainly par for the course for this most powerful of power couples.”

MEAN GIRLS: That film seems so long ago, per Celebuzz!, “Lindsay Lohan was apparently very moved by a recent episode of Katie, as evident by a series of now-deleted tweets in which the troubled 26-year-old starlet revealed that she was bullied in high school. Reaching out to host Katie Couric, Lohan thanked the affable host for profiling Whitney Kropp, a 16-year-old high school student who was nominated for homecoming queen as a joke.”

DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?: Shrug, per TMZ, “More bad news for Justin Bieber's chromed out Fisker Karma -- the ridiculous car was TOWED last night in L.A. while Bieber was performing a concert ... but it wasn't the singer's fault. TMZ has obtained pics of the parking humiliation at the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica. A rep for the towing company tells us the car was towed because it had been occupying a 15-minute parking spot ... for over 4 hours.”

TOMKAT: Just the facts, per People, “Nicole Kidman says that – contrary to media reports – she never counseled Katie Holmes in her recent split from Tom Cruise. "I never spoke to her. I wish all of them well, but I was not involved in any of that," Kidman, who weathered her own emotional split from the star in 2001, tells PEOPLE's Australian sister publication, WHO magazine.”

AND FINALLY: Today’s mystery music video.
