According to a letter released on Wednesday by David Mitchell -- the Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police at UMCP -- the school will be making changes to its alert system in order to improve efficiency.
Since 2007, any person affiliated with the University of Maryland has been able to subscribe to UMD Alerts. The large number of subscribers, approximately 160,000, have impeded the system at times and delayed the delivery time of messages to those who need it most-our current students, faculty and staff.
In an effort to improve the speed of notification to the campus community, effective today, the UMD Alerts text and email messaging system will only send updates to current students, faculty and staff.
