A trio of area universities has been ranked in the top 25 of the U.S. News annual ranking of America's top colleges.

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore is the highest ranked school on the list, coming it at #12. Georgetown University is the list's #20 school while the University of Virginia is ranked 23rd.

Unsurprisingly, three Ivy League schools - Princeton, Harvard and Yale - round out the top three.

Among small and liberal arts colleges, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis ranked #12 and Washington and Lee University in Lexington ranked 14th.

U.S. News ranked nearly 1,800 schools and based their findings on a variety of criteria including tuition and graduation rates.
