Amid fallen rankings and financial turmoil, Howard University President Sidney A. Ribeau has stepped down after five years, the Washington Post confirms.
Ribeau, 65, has been president since 2008, and announced his retirement on Tuesday after a three-day meeting held by the Board of Trustees. Just this past summer, he had signed a contract extension to serve as president through June 2015.
"I would like to express my profound gratitude to the entire community for supporting me and generating an atmosphere of positive collaboration over the last five years," Ribeau said in a statement, the Post reports.
Wayne A.I. Frederick, 42, is a professor of surgery and a cancer specialist at Howard's College of Medicine. He has been Howard's provost since June 2012, and has been named president in the interim.
