New charter school opens in College Park

ADELPHI, Md. (AP) - A new charter school near the University of Maryland's College Park campus will offer a college-preparatory program for sixth and seventh graders.

The College Park Academy opened in August, and Gov. Martin O'Malley attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony there on Monday.

The Washington Post reports that it will grow by one grade each year until it offers classes through the 12th grade.

The school is the second in Maryland to provide an early-college program, which allows students to earn college credit while in high school. The sixth- and seventh-graders now enrolled can earn up to 25 University of Maryland credits.

Another program operates out of Prince George's Community College and gives students the opportunity to earn an associate's degree at the same time as their high school diploma.
