D.C. school enrollment highest in decade

WASHINGTON (AP) - School enrollment in District of Columbia public and public charter schools has risen to the highest level in more than a decade.

The Washington Post reports an enrollment count being released Thursday shows an increase of 5 percent to nearly 81,000 students this year.

The raw numbers must be audited by an independent firm. But they appear to show that the District is gaining students again after losing students for decades. Most of the gains are in public charter schools. This is the fourth consecutive year of enrollment growth.

Enrollment in D.C. public schools stands at 45,835, a 1 percent increase over last year. But the final numbers may show a slight drop once the data is audited.

Charter school enrollment increased by 11 percent to more than 35,000.
