Woman stabbed multiple times in NE condo

A burglary turned into a stabbing in Northeast Washington Friday afternoon. Police say a woman was stabbed several times in an apartment on Washington Place.

Police were in and out of the building at Rhode Island Row after a burglar broke into the complex and knocked on an apartment's door just before 2 p.m. Investigators say the suspect forced his way inside when the victim started to open the door. The suspect tried to sexually assault the woman before stabbing her several times.

Rhode Island Row is a new community built in front of the Rhode Island Metro station and has a steady stream of foot traffic.

“Very surprised because these people haven’t even lived here that long,” says Vicki McGill, a Brookland resident. “It hasn’t been open but since the summer.”

The news was alarming to the people who live here who had never heard of a burglary and thought the place to be safe.

“It’s been pretty good,” says Nam Dang. “We were worried any issues of crime. It’s so easily accessible. So far it’s been okay."

The{ }residents say there is security requiring key fobs to access both entry doors and elevators, speculating some resident let a stranger in.

“They probably let somebody in one of the stairwells because you can’t get through the front door without the key fob,” says Nathaniel Higgins. “They must have followed somebody in. They had to follow somebody in.”

The woman was taken to the hospital in non life-threatening condition. Police are looking for a 6'2" black man wearing black and gray stripes. Police have released surveillance footage of a person of interest in the case.
