Virginia Tech shooting: Blacksburg police knew stolen car was on campus

The shooting claimed the life of a Virginia Tech police officer and the suspect.

Blacksburg police knew that a gunman in a stolen SUV could be on campus long before he shot a Virginia Tech officer and then himself, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

In a new timeline released on Tuesday night, Virginia State Police acknowledged that there was knowledge of a stolen Mercedes SUV on the Virginia Tech campus hours before Ross Ashley shot and killed Officer Deriek Crouse.

The Times-Dispatch reports that authorities in nearby Radford alerted nearby jurisdictions, including in Blacksburg and at Virginia Tech, that an SUV had been stolen the day before the shooting and that the suspect could be armed and dangerous.

That alert went out just after noon on Wednesday. The Mercedes was reported to authorities on the Blacksburg campus at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, several hours before the shooting.
