(WJLA) - The man accused of shooting a Howard County Police officer Wednesday has been charged with attempted murder, among other crimes, officials say.
Stephen Prather was released from the hospital late Thursday night and was taken to the Howard County Detention Center, where is being held without bond on accusations that he shot the officer on Washington Boulevard near Laurel.
The shooting happened late Wednesday afternoon after Prather opened fire on Ofc. Steven Houk on Route 1, touching off a massive manhunt. He was found and apprehended Thursday morning with a gunshot wound of his own to the leg.
Both Houk and Prather were injured in an exchange of gunfire, authorities say. After he was shot, Houk was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in serious condition, but his injuries were not life threatening. On Friday evening, Howard County Police tweeted that Houk's condition was upgraded from "serious" to "fair" and that he was improving daily.
Police from several jurisdictions launched an enormous sweep of the area after the shooting in a continued attempt to find Prather. He was eventually located at about 8:45 a.m. Thursday walking near the area where the shooting happened.
After being taken into custody, he was also taken to an area hospital for treatment.
