Saudi citizen caught in attempt to flee U.S., faces sex assault charge

DULLES, Va. (WJLA) - Saudi citizen Hamad Alsuwat came to America to study on a student visa, but according to police, he tried to flee this country as a wanted man before being nabbed by federal authorities at Dulles International Airport.

Stafford County authorities say that on Saturday, they started investigating the 20-year-old on the allegation that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old female at his host’s home.

"I think it would be a good idea to detain him and let's figure out what he's up to, right?" Virginia resident Robert Braun.

Fearing he may be a flight risk, Homeland Security was contacted, and police say the very next day on Sunday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials picked up Alsuwat at the airport prior to his boarding a plane for Saudi Arabia. He now faces a sex assault charge.

People we spoke with about these allegations told us that the suspect, if found guilty, took advantage of a family and a nation’s generosity.

"You shouldn't take advantage of having privileges in this country," Virginia resident Tunde Shreve said. "If you do something wrong they are going to find you."
