Investigators believe that a series of robberies on Reston area paths are likely linked.
On Thursday June 13, Fairfax County Police say that a 23-year-old man was attacked -- knocked down to the ground and then robbed on the path -- next to the soccer field at Hunters Woods Park.
On Friday at around the same time of the attack, Judy Pew was out watering her flowers only feet away from where the incident occurred.
“It concerns me if the assault was during the day,” Judy said. She worries because she and her husband use the trail to go biking. Sometimes, even her grandchildren come along.
The first incident happened just down the street this past Sunday at a trail behind Hunters Woods Plaza. A 42-year-old man was on his bike when a gang of thugs pushed him off the bike and started punching and kicking him.
Juwan Burton, a Reston resident, said: “It definitely doesn’t happen often in this area.”
Burton was walking his dog Benjamin just across the street from where the next incident happened on Monday. Police say a 31-year-old man was walking on the path when again, a group of young men came up to the victim in the middle of the day, punching him and taking off with his belongings.
The path is near a playground and the Southgate Community Center. Because of the recent incident, folks who work there are reminding young people to use the buddy system and be on alert.
“Normally, you don't really get people that walk up to you and want to mug you and take your things because this is rich environment. This is a rich county, it's very wealthy,” explained Burton.
If you have information about these crimes, police want to hear from you.
