      BELTSVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - As word about what happened here spreads, one after another, old friends come to check on the 72-year-old mechanic.

      "I've known this guy a long time -- nicest guy I ever met," says Danny Richardson.

      "He's a great guy, great guy, good man, honest straight-up guy," adds Danny Marsh.

      A burglar showed up at Lloyd's Automotive at about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, smashing his way in with a wooden sign post. What the crook didn't know was that the owner of the business was asleep inside. He awoke in terror.

      "Really blindsided by a guy forcing his way into his business," said Lt. Bill Alexander of the mechanic.

      Police say that when the suspect confronted the business owner, the elderly man opened fire with a pistol he kept in a drawer. He hit the intruder at least once.

      "That suspect runs out of the store he gets in a car and drives away...he ultimately crashes that car," explained Lt. Alexander.

      Police took the injured suspect into custody. He has been identified as 50-year-old Deryck Anthony Nedd, who has a long criminal history and is currently in critical condition. After having surgery, Nedd is expected to recover.{}

      As for the owner of Lloyd's Automotive, while the case will be reviewed by prosecutors, police say the shooting appears to be justified. His friends sure think so.

      "I'm a gun owner myself -- if he came in my house I'd do the same thing," says Danny Marsh.
