Two pedestrians hit, one killed, by cars overnight

Two pedestrians were struck by cars, one fatally, early Sunday morning in D.C. and Prince George's County, police say.

Because of one of the incidents, southbound 295 at East Capitol Street was shut down for several hours. The road reopened just before 10:30 a.m.

The first incident took place just before 3 a.m. near the Capital Beltway and Pennsylvania Avenue in District Heights. Maryland State Police say a victim was taken to a shock trauma unit in critical condition.

Southbound lanes of the Capital Beltway were shut down for a period of time.

About 2 1/2 hours later at 5:30 a.m., another person was hit and killed near RFK Stadium. D.C. Police say that the victim was struck south of East Capitol Street near southbound 295. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

A police spokeswoman says that the driver of the striking vehicle stayed on the scene.
