WASHINGTON (AP/WJLA) - A Northeast D.C. man opened fire on MPD officers late Tuesday night, shooting one officer before being shot to death himself.
The exchange of gunfire happened just after 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 1300 block of Queen Street, in the District's Trinidad neighborhood. MPD officials say officers tried to stop 19-year-old Darius Jamal Murphy, at which point he pulled out a handgun.
Murphy fired, hitting an officer. Officers quickly returned fire, striking the suspect several times. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The injured officer was taken to the hospital for treatment as well.
Authorities did not disclose why Murphy was being stopped, nor why he may have pulled a weapon.
