An Anne Arundel County man was arrested at a New York airport Tuesday morning in the death of a Frederick man whose body was found in the trunk of his car in December.
Michael Stahlnecker, 51, was taken into custody just before 6 a.m. as he prepared to board a flight at the JFK International Airport. He’s accused of killing 37-year-old John Ryan, the owner of a power-washing business and father of two, in late November.
Ryan’s body was found in the trunk of his Lexus in a Derwood, Md. parking lot on December 3. His wife had reported him missing days earlier.
The Frederick County Narcotics Task Force had started investigating Ryan last summer on allegations that he and his associates were importing and distributing marijuana. Police say Stahlnecker was a close associate of Ryan’s.
Police believe Ryan had scheduled a meeting with Stahlnecker on the morning of November 28 at a warehouse leased by Stahlnecker in Fort Laurel, Md. Police found Ryan’s blood near the rear loading dock and on the bristles of a broom outside the rear of the business.
Police say Ryan was shot at the warehouse and then driven in the trunk of his own car to Montgomery County. Investigators say they found an unspecified amount of marijuana and cash in the trunk along with Ryan's body.
Stahlnecker faces charges of first and second-degree murder, assault and other related charges. He’s being held on a fugitive warrant in New York pending extradition to Maryland.
Police have not determined a motive, but believe Stahlnecker owed large amounts of money to several people.
