Maryland town councilman arrested after breaking into wrong home in Virginia
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) -- A Maryland town council member has been arrested on burglary charges in northern Virginia.
Fairfax County Police said Monday that 41-year-old Selwyn Bridgeman of Bladensburg, Maryland, broke into a Fairfax apartment back in January.
Police say Bridgeman had been attempting to contact an acquaintance in the apartment complex but knocked on the wrong door. Police say he then entered the apartment through an unlocked door when no one answered. He left when confronted by the residents.
Those residents called police after they noticed money missing from their apartment.
Bridgeman was arrested Saturday in Maryland and is currently jailed awaiting extradition.
Town officials referred questions to police.
Bridgeman lost a race for mayor last year and news reports indicate he was accused of posting threats on social media after his defeat.
