DUMFRIES, Va. (WJLA) - A man has been arrested for allegedly killing two pet dogs and seriously injuring a third after an argument with the woman who owns them.
The incident occurred Monday in the Town of Dumfries.
Dumfries police said they were dispatched to a home in the 17700 block of Confederate Court at 8:45 a.m. to investigate a report of a domestic assault with weapons.
The 29-year-old woman who lives in the home said that she and a man she knows, Gerard Darvell Williams, were verbally arguing that morning, and the fight escalated, with Williams assaulting her and pushing her.
The woman said Williams then took a phone off a table and threw it into a sliding glass door, shattering it. Shortly after that, she said the fight ended and she began to gather up some belongings to leave the house.
At that point, the woman said she saw Williams use a kitchen knife to stab her dog.
Officers searched the property and said they found an adult male pit bull dead, with a stab wound to its back, as well as two 2-week-old puppies, one of which was dead and one that was seriously injured.
The two puppies appeared to have suffered blunt-force trauma, according to police. They said the injured puppy would be taken to an animal hospital for treatment, and a necropsy would be performed on the dead puppy.
Police said they also found a female adult pitbull and three other puppies in the home, which appeared to be unharmed.
Williams was arrested and has been charged with felony animal cruelty, misdemeanor animal cruelty, domestic assault and battery, and destruction of property. Police said additional charges against him are pending, per results of the necropsy of the dead puppy.
Williams is being held without bond, and is due in court on Aug. 25.
