(WJLA) - In a quiet suburban neighborhood outside Fredericksburg, Virginia, police say some strange secrets were kept in a house just down this street - secrets involving a Saudi exchange student and the family that took him in.
"You really have to make sure you know who you are looking after or taking in," said Matt Howard.
All secrets came to light this past weekend, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Department. The student, 20-year-old Hamad Alsuwat, was arrested Sunday at Dulles Airport while trying to board a plane back to Saudi Arabia.
Police have charged him with sexually assaulting the 17-year-old daughter of the couple he had been living with since September. It is being reported that the teenage girl has autism.
But on Wednesday, in a surprising twist to the story, police revealed that they have charged the mother of that girl with actually trying to help Alsuwat escape.
"Somebody posted on Facebook, 'the worst mom ever' -- it is kind of shocking that you wouldn't protect your own child," said Becky Paul.
According to court documents, the mother - whose name has not been released in order to protect the victim - had been covering for the student since November, when her husband caught his wife and Alsuwat having sex in a shed behind their house.
Now, both she and Alsuwat are behind bars.
A previous version of this story incorrectly indicated that Hanad Alsuwat was a student at Mary Washington University. Alsuwat has never been a student there.
