Fourteen D.C.-area people charged with collecting unemployment fraudulently

Fourteen people in the D.C. metro area have been charged with illegally collecting a combined $250,000+ in unemployment funds, prosecutors say.

Each of the 14 people involved in the scam collected between $13,000 and $23,200 and have been charged with first-degree fraud.

Prosecutors say that the suspects, who hail from the District of Columbia, Prince George's County, Montgomery County and Stafford County, each submitted fraudulent unemployment claims while they had jobs.

The fraud happened at various times between 2007 and 2012, officials say.

The defendants each face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
