MCLEAN, Va. (WJLA) - A McLean couple were stabbed and critically wounded during a home invasion robbery in the 900 block of Spencer Road, Fairfax County Police said Monday.

The couple, both 61, suffered upper-body stab wounds and were being treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital for life-threatening injuries.

Police said the man answered a knock on his front door late Sunday night and the attacker then forced his way inside the home. The homeowner and his wife were each assaulted, but she managed to activate an alarm which caused the attacker to flee.

Officers who responded managed to track down the vehicle that the attacker reportedly fled in; police arrested and charged two people - a 31-year-old man and 30-year-old woman.

Identities of both the victims and the two suspects were being withheld by police.

Authorities said the home invasion was likely not a random act, but investigators said they were still attempting to determine the "totality of the circumstances." Police said they were confident there was no further threat to public safety.
