ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP/ABC7) - The son of a disgraced former aide to President George W. Bush was in court in Montgomery County Tuesday on a first-murder charge.
Claude Alexander Allen III, who goes by Alex, says he killed Michael Harvey last Friday with a hatchet over an argument about dealing drugs. That is what prosecutors maintain. They also believe Allen changed his story after investigators interrogated him.
Hours after the judge announced Allen would be held without bond, Harvey’s family spoke out. His mother hopes Allen spends the rest of his life behind bars, but fears her family won’t get justice due to his powerful family connections.
“When I look at these pictures I think about the times he shared with his children,” says Terry Garrett.
A wall in her Alexandria home now serves as a shrine to her 25-year-old son who she affectionately called Mikey.
“I am going to miss seeing that smile, those eyes, hearing [that] voice, the laughter,” she says.
Early Friday morning, the father of four and aspiring mechanic was found dead, the victim of a gruesome murder. Prosecutors believe the relationship between Harvey and the alleged hatchet-wielding murderer centered around drugs.
“It is every parent’s worst nightmare,” says defense attorney Richard Finci. “Every parent dreads something like this.”
When Allen appeared in court via closed circuit TV Tuesday, he looked more like the one-time college student he was before dropping out of the University of Richmond.
Initially, Allen said he killed someone trying to break into his house, but a witness says Allen came in from the garage covered in blood. Prosecutors say Allen then asked a third person to come into the garage. The witness says he saw Harvey’s body with a slash to the back of the neck. The witness says Allen asked him to help load the body into a trash can and dispose of it. When Allen went into the basement, the witness ran from the house and called 911.
Allen’s attorney’s waived bond during court proceedings Tuesday, say8ing they need more time to understand what really happened.
Harvey’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
