Charles Smith indicted in son's death

(WJLA) - A Washington, D.C. man has been indicted for child abuse and motor vehicle manslaughter in the death of his 4-year-old son.

On May 9, 2013, Charles Smith, 33, was driving on Bladensburg Road in Cottage City, Md., with his 7-year-old stepdaughter and son, Charles Sullivan. As he came to the intersection of Bladensburg Road and 38th Avenue, officials say Smith changed lanes into the southbound left turn lane and passed two vehicles while continuing into the northbound turn lane.

Smith struck two vehicles and crossed back into the southbound lanes of Bladensburg Road. He then mounted the curb, struck two utility poles, a tree, and a retaining wall, officials say.

Smith's son was thrown from the vehicle and died on the scene. His stepdaughter sustained minor injuries.

Smith has also been charged with negligent homicide, driving while impaired, reckless driving, and negligent driving.

A warrant for Smith's arrest was issued after his indictment.
