BURTONSVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - A smash and grab burglar in Montgomery County didn't just steal cash and a safe from a Subway restaurant early Tuesday morning. The thief also made off with a key piece of evidence police could have used to find him.
The burglar broke through the glass of the restaurant's front door around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, turning the lock and opening the door. The thief emptied a cash register and also took an entire safe from behind the counter. Also stolen was the digital video recorder that stored the footage from the store's security cameras, complicating the police investigation.
The robbery was the latest in a string of smash and grabs in Montgomery and Prince George's County. Tuesday night marked the second time in recent months that this particular Subway, located at 15500 Old Columbia Pike, had been robbed in such a manner. A nearby Radio Shack location as well as another Subway in the area have also been targeted, and police are investigating if the recent run of smash and grab robberies are connected.
