1 dead, 1 hospitalized in Mount Vernon shooting
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) – Fairfax County police are investigating a shooting in an Mount Vernon neighborhood that left one person dead.
Police were called to the 4300 block of Pembrook Village Drive in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County at approximately 7:55 p.m. Monday for a report of a shooting.
Now, family members of 16-year-old Kevin Johnson console one another a day after the young man’s death, while Johnson’s classmates remember his kindness and aspirations of becoming a rapper.
Police say an 18-year-old suspect shot a handgun, striking and killing Johnson, while another 14-year-old boy currently remains in stable condition.
Several others were in the home at the time, and all knew one another. Eddy Azcarte with Fairfax Police says that investigators are looking into what kind of gathering was taking place, and whether the shooting was accidental or intentional:
"That's part of what they're trying to solidify as to what the sequences and circumstances were."
Neighbor Abdul Majundel says new tenants moved into the home about six months ago, and he would often see young people hanging out late at night.
Kevin Johnson attended Bryant High School in Alexandria, where he was enrolled in the AIM program for students with behavioral problems.
Friend and neighbor Makayla Holmes says she and her friends have been crying all day:
"We just can't understand the fact that he's gone, he's just not here anymore."
Police have since recovered the weapon. There is no threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing.
