LAUREL, Md. (AP/WJLA) - Police said a gunman fatally shot another man who was dating his estranged wife before shooting and wounding himself in Laurel.

The fatal shooting and suicide attempt occurred around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Anne Arundel County Police on Thursday identified the gunman as 39-year-old Robert Mendiola and said he would be charged with first-degree murder.

Mendiola's wife, Cathy, had separated from him last month and also took out a protective order against him.

Police say Mendiola approached his wife and 39-year-old Howard Popp, of Baltimore, as they sat in a car in the 3300 block of Sudlersville South.

The pair left the car, and the gunman shot Popp several times, killing him.

Mendiola then went to a nearby shed in the 300 block of Old Line Avenue, where he lived, and shot himself, according to investigators.

Mendiola was being treated at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Hospital for a gunshot wound and police said they would file the charges against him upon his release.
