(WJLA) - The experiment that let Twitter users send each other direct messages without following each other is over.
The Next Web reports that Twitter quietly took the option away from users only about a month after rolling it out, causing an uproar among the platform's devoted community.
Twitter officials made it clearly known at the time that users had to check a box allowing people who they didn't follow to send them direct messages. On Tuesday, writers at The Next Web discovered that the check box had disappeared.
Officials at Twitter directed The Next Web toward a September blog post indicating that the company was rolling out and closing various experiments, of which this was likely one.
