(WJLA) - The gold iPhone 5s has proven to be one of the most highly sought after piece of technology in recent memory, and the scarcity of the device is apparently cause for people to pay top dollar for one.

One needs to look no further than eBay to see how much some Apple fans are willing to pay for the gold iPhone.

The auction site currently has listings for more than 1,300 of the gold phones, many of which have Buy It Now prices north of $2,000.

The gold Apple iPhone 5s, as well as the black and white models, retailed on the low end for $199 with a two-year contract. The most expensive phone not tied to a cellular plan goes for $849.

However, very few of the gold phones were shipped to stores for people waiting in line overnight to purchase, and models offered online sold out in minutes. Therefore, people who want the gold phone have been forced to the secondary market.

The most expensive one found on eBay Monday morning is going for $4,000, with dozens more going for $1,000 or more. A number of listings on Craigslist's Washington, D.C. also are asking for more than $1,000 for gold iPhones as well.
