Developers at a fledgling mall along what's widely referred to as Frederick's "Golden Mile" are hoping that the city's third Walmart location will revitalize the area, the Frederick News-Post reports.
Rockwood Capital, the development firm tasked with building up the Frederick Towne Mall property along U.S. Route 40 in the western part of the city, says that bringing in the big box store may be the solution to bringing business back to the area.
"We believe it will reinvigorate this area of the Golden Mile and the entire Golden Mile," an attorney for Rockville Capital said during a meeting with Frederick Mayor Randy McClement, according to the News-Post.
To welcome Walmart to the property, though, the developer has to file for a zoning change. The property is currently zoned for a mix of residential and commercial property, the News-Post says.
Walmart already has two locations in Frederick; one is on Monocacy Boulevard and the other, a Supercenter, is on Guilford Drive.
The Frederick Towne Mall is currently anchored by a Bon-Ton department store, Boscov's and a Home Depot.
